Size guide

Comfort starts with the right size. This guide covers how to measure your foot at home, US / UK / EU conversions, and brand-by-brand fit notes from our shoe team. Still unsure? Call us at (310) 398-7497 and we’ll talk you through it.

Measure your foot at home

Tape a blank piece of paper to a hard floor, against a wall.
Stand barefoot with your heel against the wall, weight evenly on both feet.
Mark the tip of your longest toe on the paper with a pen held straight up.
Repeat for your other foot. Use the longer measurement — most people have one foot slightly larger.
Measure from the edge of the paper to the mark in centimeters or inches.
Find your length in the chart below.

Best time to measure: late afternoon or after walking around, when feet are at their fullest.

EU sizes vary slightly between brands. If you’re between two sizes on the chart, see the brand-specific notes below.

Brand fit notes

Here’s what each brand says about its own fit. Specific styles can still vary, so call if you’re between sizes.

UGG: True to size for most styles, and UGG lists half sizes. The sheepskin can adapt with wear, but UGG does not specify a fixed amount — so if you’re between sizes, compare both against your measured foot length rather than automatically rounding down.
Birkenstock: European sizing, and the brand’s chart groups US half sizes into one EU size — a women’s 8.5 is EU 39, the same as an 8. Birkenstock recommends the larger size if you fall between sizes. Check the width as well as the length: regular and narrow are offered on many styles.
Dr. Martens: Whole UK sizes. Dr. Martens says most styles run true to size, and if you’re between sizes the brand recommends the larger size with an insole to take up the half. The leather softens with wear.
Clarks: True to size. Clarks says its Desert Boots stretch a little over time, but you should buy the size that fits comfortably from the first wear and not rely on them stretching. Wallabees: start with your usual size and see our Wallabee sizing guide. For a wider foot, Clarks offers width fittings on many styles; choose the wider fitting rather than adding half a size.
Taos: True to size. Built for arch and metatarsal support — great for all-day wear.
Pikolinos: European sizing, matched to your measured foot length rather than a generic conversion. On Pikolinos’ own women’s chart, EU 38 is a US 7.5–8, EU 39 is a US 8.5 and EU 40 is a US 9–9.5; men’s EU 41 is a US 8. See our Pikolinos sizing guide for the full chart.
Timberland: Timberland flags the Premium 6-Inch as running large and recommends a half size down on that style. Other styles are not flagged — use the size chart and measure your foot. Boots should feel snug but not tight, with room to move your toes.
Dansko: European whole sizes, and Dansko’s chart groups US half sizes into one EU size — a women’s 7.5 and 8 are both EU 38. Use the chart rather than converting. Built for support during long days on your feet.
Steve Madden: Mostly true to size. Boots can run narrow through the shaft — call us if you have a fuller calf or are between sizes.
Kids’ sizes: Children’s shoes use their own scale, and it restarts at 1 for youth sizes. See the kids’ shoe size chart for infant, toddler and youth conversions.
Other brands we still stock: We carry remaining stock from several brands we no longer reorder, including Vans, Converse, TOMS, Merrell, ECCO and Crocs. Converse says its Chuck Taylor styles run large and recommends going a half size down. Vans, Crocs and Merrell run true to size; Vans uses unisex sizing, so a women’s size is 1.5 lower in unisex numbers. ECCO uses European sizing and is true to size in length. Wide and narrow widths

Most brands offer a standard medium (M / B / regular) width. A few brands include narrow (N) or wide (W) widths — look for the width letter next to the size on the product page. Need extra room? How do I measure my foot at home?

Tape blank paper against a wall, stand barefoot with your heel touching the wall, mark the tip of your longest toe with a pen held straight up, measure from the paper edge to the mark. Use the longer foot if they differ. Best measured in late afternoon when feet are slightly larger.

What size Birkenstock should I get?

Birkenstock uses European sizing. EU 36 fits a US women's 5–5.5; EU 40 fits a US men's 7–7.5; EU 42 fits a US men's 9–9.5. Half sizes are grouped into one EU size, and Birkenstock recommends the larger size if you are between sizes. Check the width as well as the length.

Do Dr. Martens run true to size?

Dr. Martens uses whole UK sizes. The brand says most styles run true to size, and if you are between sizes it recommends taking the larger size and adding an insole to take up the half. The leather softens with wear.

Do UGG boots run true to size?
