Dr. Martens Sizing & Break-In Guide: What Size to Buy (2026)
Quick answer: Dr. Martens run about a half size large and are built in UK sizing (our product pages list the US equivalent next to each size). If you wear a half size, go down to the nearest whole size; if you wear a whole size, order your usual size. Expect 1–2 weeks of break-in while the leather softens.
Do Dr. Martens run true to size?
Not quite — they run about a half size large, and Dr. Martens only makes whole sizes. So if you are normally a half size (say a US 8.5), size down to the nearest whole size (US 8). If you are already a whole size, order your usual size. The boots are roomy when new and the leather molds to your foot as it breaks in.
Are Dr. Martens in UK or US sizes?
Dr. Martens are sized in UK sizes. Every Feet Heart product page shows the US men's and women's equivalent next to the UK size, so you can pick with confidence. As a rule of thumb, a UK size is roughly one number below the US men's size and about one-and-a-half below the US women's size.
How long do Dr. Martens take to break in?
Most styles take 1 to 2 weeks of regular wear to soften. To make break-in easier: wear thick socks at first, start with short periods (an hour or two a day), and consider a leather conditioner on the flex points. The classic smooth leather takes the longest; softer leathers like Nappa and Virginia break in faster.
