Best Waterproof Shoes for Women: Boots and Clogs for Wet Days
For waterproof shoes for women, start with the Timberland Stone Street for a 6-inch platform lace-up, the Timberland Nellie Chukka for a shorter boot, the Timberland Kinsley for a block heel, or the UGG Otzo for a slip-on clog. Timberland labels all three boots waterproof, and UGG lists waterproof leather on the Otzo.
We only call a shoe waterproof when the brand labels that exact model waterproof, which keeps this guide short. We could not confirm a women's rubber rain boot or waterproof sneaker in our range. Even a waterproof boot cannot stop water coming in over the top, so choose the height for the puddles you expect.
Which waterproof pair fits your day?
| What you need | What to compare |
|---|---|
| A lace-up with some height | Stone Street: waterproof leather upper, seam-sealed construction and 200 grams of PrimaLoft insulation. |
| Less boot around the ankle | Nellie Chukka: waterproof leather upper and seam-sealed construction in a shorter shape. |
| Some lift | Kinsley: sold by Timberland as a 6-inch waterproof boot, with a block heel. |
| Easy on and off | UGG Otzo: waterproof leather and a nubuck upper in an open-back clog. |
| A shoe for work | Dansko XP 2.0: slip-resistant outsole, with waterproof leather on select styles only. |

Timberland Stone Street: the 6-inch platform boot
The upper is made with waterproof Premium Timberland leather and the construction is seam-sealed, the pairing to look for when rain is part of the plan. It has a padded collar and a rubber lug outsole. The 200 grams of PrimaLoft insulation also makes it a cold-weather boot, so think about how warm your feet run on a mild wet day. Timberland shows it in both colors we link: Jet Black and Wheat.
Timberland Nellie Chukka: a shorter waterproof boot
Choose Nellie if a 6-inch boot feels like too much. Timberland's page for the Nellie Waterproof Chukka, shown in colors other than ours, lists a waterproof leather upper, seam-sealed construction, 200 grams of PrimaLoft insulation and a rubber outsole it describes as high-traction. It also lists a removable footbed, so try your own insert in the exact pair if you use one. A shorter boot gives water a lower way in, so it makes more sense for wet pavement than deep puddles.
Timberland Kinsley: a waterproof boot with a heel
Timberland names this model the Women's Kinsley 6-Inch Waterproof Boot. Its page for the model, shown in a color other than ours, lists a waterproof leather upper, seam-sealed construction, a rubber lug outsole and a 2.25-inch heel. Choose Kinsley for the shape and lift of that block heel, not as an ice-traction feature.
UGG Otzo: a waterproof clog
UGG lists waterproof leather on the Otzo Clog, with a nubuck upper, a leather and wool jersey lining, a contoured EVA footbed and a lightweight rubber outsole. It has an open back, so choose it for quick trips over wet pavement, not standing water. Our listing is in Black.
Waterproof or water-resistant?
Waterproof means a shoe is built to keep water out. Timberland says it uses waterproof leathers, seam-sealed construction and/or waterproof membranes, so the mix varies by boot. Water-resistant or water-repellent usually describes a material or surface treatment that helps shed light moisture. It does not add sealed seams, and a spray cannot add a membrane. Waterproof also does not mean warm or grippy, so check insulation and outsole separately.
That is why standard suede UGG Classic boots are not rain boots, even though UGG makes the waterproof Otzo above. Check the exact model. Read more in our UGG waterproof guide, Timberland waterproof guide and winter-boot care guide.
Need a waterproof shoe for work?
This is the thin part of our range. Dansko lists waterproof leather on select XP 2.0 styles only, and our sizes in those styles change, so we do not feature one here. Our Dansko clog guide shows which finish to check. The XP 2.0 in Honey Distressed has a rubber outsole Dansko describes as slip resistant on dry, wet and oily/wet surfaces, but we do not call that finish waterproof.
We do not list the Timberland boots above as safety-toe boots. Timberland's pages for Stone Street and Nellie list a steel shank, which is a different thing. If your job sets a footwear requirement, check it against the exact product before ordering.
Water-friendly is a different promise
Birkenstock describes the Arizona EVA as water-friendly, lightweight and flexible, for everything from the pool to post-workout. Water-friendly is the brand's word, so it is the word we use. An open sandal will not keep your feet dry in the rain.
How to check the fit
Try any pair indoors on a clean floor with the socks you plan to wear. In the boots, your toes should not touch the front, and a little heel movement is normal: Timberland allows a quarter to a half-inch of slippage. Use the Timberland sizing guide for these boots and our UGG size guide for the Otzo. Dansko clogs fit differently, and Dansko and Birkenstock use EU sizing, so check the Dansko sizing guide or Birkenstock sizing guide rather than guessing a conversion.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best waterproof shoe for women?
At Feet Heart, start with the Timberland Stone Street, which Timberland lists with a waterproof leather upper and seam-sealed construction. Choose the Nellie Chukka for a shorter boot or the Kinsley for a block heel.
Which brand has the best waterproof shoes?
No brand wins on its name alone, because waterproofing is set model by model. Timberland, UGG and Dansko each sell some waterproof styles and some that are not. Most of the women's waterproof pairs we carry are Timberland.
Are there truly waterproof shoes?
Yes, within limits. Timberland says its waterproof boots are designed to lock out water, using waterproof leathers, seam sealing and/or membranes that vary by boot. Water can still come in over the collar, so height matters.
What shoes are good for walking in the rain?
Look for a closed shoe or boot labeled waterproof for that exact model, with a rubber outsole and enough height for the puddles you expect. Stone Street and Nellie both fit. Open sandals are not rain shoes.
Do you carry waterproof work shoes?
Very few, and our sizes change. Dansko lists waterproof leather on select XP 2.0 styles only, so check the exact finish in our Dansko clog guide. We do not list the Timberland boots here as safety-toe boots.
