Best Comfort Shoes for Nurses
If you're on your feet for 12 hours, the wrong shoe ruins the next day too. We've fit shoes for nurses, ER staff, OR techs, and travel RNs out of our Culver City and Arcadia stores for over twenty years — here's what holds up.
What makes a good nursing shoe?
- Real arch and heel support — not just foam cushioning that flattens by week three.
- Slip-resistant sole — rubber outsole with siping, not a smooth EVA.
- Easy to wipe clean — smooth leather or coated synthetic beats mesh in a healthcare setting.
- Closed toe + low heel — most facilities require both.
- Roomy toe box — feet swell over a shift; a snug toe box at hour 1 is agony by hour 10.
Best clog: Dansko Professional
The Dansko Professional has been the nursing-clog default for thirty years for a reason — a rocker sole that propels your stride, a roomy toe box, and full leather that hoses clean. Sizing runs in EU; most US Women's 8 ≈ EU 38, US Women's 9 ≈ EU 39. Whole sizes only. Order true to size unless you have a particularly narrow heel.
Best cushioned sneaker: Taos
If you prefer a sneaker, Taos is our pick for healthcare workers. The thickly cushioned, removable footbed has genuine built-in arch support, so it stays comfortable through a long shift, and many styles wipe clean and come in wider fits.
Best slide / quick-wear: Birkenstock Boston
The Boston clog with the rubber outsole has become a real shift shoe in the last few years. Cork footbed for arch support, real heel cup, durable sole. Birkenstock runs in EU sizing — see our Birkenstock Boston sizing guide.
Best walking shoe: ECCO Soft 7
For nurses who want a low-profile leather sneaker that doesn't look like a sneaker, the ECCO Soft 7 in leather is the pick. Comes in wide and standard, holds up to daily wear, wipes clean.
Top picks in stock
- Dansko Professional clog and the slip-resistant XP 2.0 Waterproof clog.
- Taos Star sneaker — cushioned, removable footbed.
- Birkenstock Boston and ECCO Soft 7 stock rotates — check the Birkenstock and ECCO collections.
What size should I order if my feet swell during shifts?
Order your evening size, not your morning size. If you're between sizes, size up. A roomy toe box and slightly looser heel can be solved with a thicker sock; a too-tight shoe at hour 8 cannot.
Returns?
Free U.S. shipping and free 30-day prepaid returns on regular-priced shoes. If they don't survive a couple of shifts, ship them back.
