Dr. Martens 1460 Sizing Guide

The 1460 8-eye boot is Dr. Martens' original silhouette and the one most people get sizing wrong on the first try. Here's what to actually order, in plain English, from a Southern California shop that has fitted these boots for over twenty years.

Do Dr. Martens 1460 run big or small?

They run big. The 1460 is built on a generous, boxy last with an oversized toe box and stiff leather upper that does not collapse around the foot. Almost everyone needs to go down at least half a size from their regular sneaker size — many need a full size down.

How much should I size down in the 1460?

  • Average or narrow foot, normal volume: Go down a full size (e.g. usual US 9 → order US 8).
  • Wide foot or high instep: Go down half a size (US 9 → US 8.5). Dr. Martens only offers half sizes in some women's runs, so men's wearers may have to choose between a full size down and their normal size.
  • Whole sizes only? The standard 1460 men's range is whole sizes only. Round down to the nearest whole size, not up.

Men's vs women's 1460 — what's the difference?

The men's and women's 1460 use different lasts. Women's runs slightly narrower in the heel and forefoot with a half-size system. If you're a woman with a wider foot or higher arch, the unisex/men's version often fits better — just convert your size (women's 8 ≈ men's 6).

How long is the break-in period?

Plan on 2–3 weeks of daily wear before the leather softens around your foot. Thick socks, leather conditioner on the tongue and heel collar, and short wears at first reduce blisters. The Smooth leather breaks in slower than the softer Bex or Quad models.

What's the return policy if I order the wrong size?

We offer free U.S. shipping and free 30-day prepaid returns on regular-priced merchandise, so you can size up or down once without paying anything. Sale items are final.

How can I tell if my Dr. Martens are real?

Counterfeit Docs are everywhere online, so the safest move is to buy from an authorized Dr. Martens retailer — Feet Heart has been one for over 20 years. On a genuine pair, look for the signature yellow welt stitching around the sole, the “Dr. Martens AirWair — Bouncing Soles” heel loop, the grooved AirWair sole with its stamp, and clean, even stitching with no glue smears. If the price seems too good to be true, it usually is.

1460 vs 1461 vs 2976 — which Dr. Martens should I buy?

All three share the same air-cushioned AirWair sole; the difference is the silhouette (and the “runs big, size down” rule applies to all of them):

  • 1460 — the original 8-eye lace-up boot. Most versatile, most ankle support.
  • 1461 — the 3-eye low shoe (Gibson/Oxford). Easier on and off, a little dressier, year-round.
  • 2976 — the Chelsea slip-on boot. No laces, quick to wear, same sizing advice.
