Birkenstock Sizing Guide: EU to US Conversion & Width (2026)
Quick answer: Birkenstock uses European (EU) sizing and runs slightly large. If you are between sizes, size down. Most Birkenstocks also come in two widths — Regular and Narrow — so pick the width that matches your foot. The cork-and-latex footbed molds to your foot after a few wears.
What size Birkenstock should I get (EU to US)?
Birkenstocks are labeled in EU sizes. Use this conversion:
| EU | US Women | US Men |
|---|---|---|
| 36 | 5 – 5.5 | — |
| 37 | 6 – 6.5 | — |
| 38 | 7 – 7.5 | 5 – 5.5 |
| 39 | 8 – 8.5 | 6 – 6.5 |
| 40 | 9 – 9.5 | 7 – 7.5 |
| 41 | 10 – 10.5 | 8 – 8.5 |
| 42 | 11 – 11.5 | 9 – 9.5 |
| 43 | 12 – 12.5 | 10 – 10.5 |
| 44 | — | 11 – 11.5 |
| 45 | — | 12 – 12.5 |
If you fall between two sizes, choose the smaller EU size — Birkenstocks run a touch large.
Regular vs Narrow width — which Birkenstock width do I need?
Birkenstock makes most styles in Regular (medium/wide) and Narrow widths. On the footbed, the strap mounting differs: choose Narrow if your foot is slim or the regular feels loose at the straps, and Regular for an average-to-wide foot. Your toes should sit just behind the front edge with a little room, and your heel should be centered in the heel cup.
Do Birkenstocks need breaking in?
Yes — the cork-and-latex footbed is firm at first and softens to mold to your arch over the first week or two of wear. Start with a few hours a day. The molded footbed is exactly what makes Birkenstocks so supportive once broken in.
