Are UGGs Waterproof? Wearing UGGs in Rain & Snow
It is one of the most common questions we hear in our stores: can you wear UGGs in the rain? The short answer is that classic sheepskin UGGs are water-resistant, not waterproof — they handle a little drizzle, but they are not built for puddles, heavy rain, or slushy snow. UGG also makes a separate line of genuinely waterproof weather boots. Here is how to tell the difference and how to keep your pair looking good. We have been an authorized UGG retailer since 2003.
Are UGG boots waterproof?
Classic UGG boots and slippers made from Twinface sheepskin and suede are water-resistant, not waterproof. The suede can take a light sprinkle, but soaking them in heavy rain or snow can leave water stains, salt marks, and matting on the suede. Only UGG’s dedicated weather and snow boots are built to be waterproof.
Can you wear UGGs in the rain or snow?
A short walk in light drizzle is usually fine, especially if the boots have been treated with a protectant spray. What you want to avoid is standing water, downpours, and wet slush. Suede absorbs water, so prolonged exposure can discolor the surface and dampen the wool lining, which then takes a long time to dry. For genuinely wet or snowy days, reach for a waterproof weather boot instead.
How do I make my UGGs more water-resistant?
Before the first wear, apply a suede and sheepskin protectant spray (UGG sells its own; most quality suede protectors work too). Let it dry fully, then reapply every few weeks during wet season and after each cleaning. A protectant will not make classic UGGs waterproof, but it noticeably improves how they shed light moisture and resist staining.
What should I do if my UGGs get wet?
- Blot — do not rub — with a clean, dry cloth to lift surface water.
- Stuff them with paper towels or newspaper to hold their shape and absorb moisture from inside.
- Air-dry at room temperature, away from direct heat, radiators, or sunlight, which can crack and stiffen the suede.
- Once dry, brush the suede with a suede brush to restore the nap, then re-apply protectant spray.

Which UGGs are actually waterproof?
UGG’s weather and snow boot lines are built to be waterproof, with treated leather or sealed, waterproof construction rather than open suede. These are the styles to choose for rain, snow, and cold-weather commuting — not the classic sheepskin boots. If a style is described as a “weather” or “snow” boot, it is engineered for wet conditions.
Which UGG should I buy?
For genuinely wet or snowy days, choose a waterproof weather boot:
- UGG Women’s Ridge Mini Snow Boot — waterproof snow boot built for cold and wet.
- UGG Men’s Truckee Field Boot — a rugged weather-ready field boot.
If you love the classic sheepskin look and mostly wear them in dry or lightly damp conditions, these are water-resistant once treated with protectant spray:
