Dr. Martens 1460 vs 2976 Chelsea: Lace-Up Boot or Slip-On?

The 1460 and the 2976 are both built on Dr. Martens' signature air-cushioned sole with the same yellow welt stitching — the difference is how they close. The 1460 is the original 8-eye lace-up; the 2976 Chelsea has no laces at all, using elastic side panels instead. Here is how to choose, from an authorized Dr. Martens retailer.

What is the difference between the 1460 and the 2976?

The 1460 is the 8-eyelet lace-up that started it all in 1960 — you can dial in the fit across the whole instep and ankle. The 2976 (introduced in the 1970s) is the Chelsea version: smooth shaft, elastic gussets, pull tabs, and a clean profile that slides under trousers. Same leather, same air-cushioned sole, same break-in character.

Which is easier to put on?

The 2976, by a mile — grab the tabs and pull it on. That convenience is the main reason people choose a Chelsea. The trade-off is adjustability: if your ankles are slim or your instep is high, the 1460's laces let you tune the fit in a way elastic cannot.

Do the 1460 and 2976 fit the same?

Both come in whole sizes only and tend to run roomy — if you wear a half size, most people go down to the next whole size. Because the 2976 cannot be tightened, getting the size right matters even more; when in doubt, call us before ordering. Full walkthrough in our Dr. Martens sizing guide and 1460 sizing guide.

How is the break-in?

Similar — the leather and sole are the same, so expect the classic Dr. Martens break-in period either way. The 2976's elastic panels give a little sooner around the ankle, while the 1460 lets you lace loosely during the first weeks. Our break-in guide covers the method we recommend.

Which should I buy?

  • Choose the 1460 for the iconic look, adjustable fit, and lace-up security.
  • Choose the 2976 for slip-on convenience and a cleaner, minimal silhouette.
