How to Clean Dr. Martens & Condition the Leather

Dr. Martens are built to last for years, and a little regular care keeps the leather supple and looking sharp. The right method depends on which finish you have. Feet Heart is an authorized Dr. Martens retailer, family-run since 2003, so here is how we recommend caring for each type.

How do you clean smooth leather Dr. Martens?

Wipe off dirt with a damp cloth and let them dry naturally. Then work in a small amount of Dr. Martens Wonder Balsam with a cloth or sponge to clean, condition, and protect the leather in one step. Buff gently. Do this every few weeks if you wear them often, to stop the leather drying out and cracking at the flex points.

How do you care for patent leather Dr. Martens?

Patent leather should not get Wonder Balsam. Instead wipe it with a damp cloth, and use a patent-leather finish or a tiny amount of glycerine on a soft cloth to restore shine and reduce scuffs. Buff dry with a clean cloth.

How do you clean suede or nubuck Dr. Martens?

Never use balsam or a water-based cleaner on suede. Brush with a suede brush to lift dirt, use a suede eraser for marks, and finish with a suede protector spray. Always brush in one direction to keep the nap even.

How do I make Dr. Martens water-resistant?

They are water-resistant, not waterproof. Apply a protector spray (Dr. Martens Ultra Protector or similar) before first wear and reapply regularly, especially on suede. Avoid soaking them; if they get wet, stuff with paper and air-dry away from direct heat.

How do I stop Dr. Martens cracking?

Condition the leather regularly with Wonder Balsam, store them away from radiators and direct sun, and let them dry slowly if they get wet. Dry heat is what cracks the leather, so never use a hairdryer or set them next to a heater.
