Birkenstock Boston vs Arizona: How to Choose Between the Clog and the Sandal
The Boston and the Arizona are two of Birkenstock's most-loved styles, and people ask us about them constantly at our Feet World stores in Culver City and Arcadia. They share the same famous footbed, so a lot of the choice comes down to one simple thing: do you want a closed-toe shoe or an open sandal? Here's how we help shoppers decide.

What's the actual difference between the Boston and the Arizona?
The Boston is a closed-toe clog and the Arizona is an open two-strap sandal. That's the core difference. The Boston covers the top of your foot and your toes with a single wide strap across the instep, so it looks and feels more like a shoe. The Arizona leaves the toes open and uses two adjustable straps over the foot, which makes it a classic warm-weather sandal. Everything below your foot, though, is essentially identical between the two.

Do the Boston and Arizona use the same footbed?
Yes, they share the exact same contoured cork-and-latex footbed. That's the part that earned Birkenstock its reputation, and it's the same on both styles: deep arch support, a raised toe bar that encourages your toes to grip, and a heel cup that cradles your foot. Both also have that suede-lined top layer that softens and molds to your foot over the first week or two of wear. So if you've worn one Birkenstock style and loved how it felt underfoot, the other will feel familiar the moment you step in.
Which one should I buy for year-round wear?
Buy the Boston if you want something you can wear in nearly every season. Because it's closed at the toe, the Boston works with bare feet in mild weather and with socks once it cools down, so plenty of our customers reach for it from fall through spring and beyond. The Arizona is built for warm weather and bare feet, so it shines in spring and summer and on vacation. If you're only buying one pair and you live somewhere with real seasons, the Boston usually wins on versatility. If you want a go-to sandal for hot days, the Arizona is the one.
Do the Boston and Arizona fit and size the same way?
Yes, they use the same Birkenstock EU sizing and both run roomy, so the fit advice is identical. Birkenstock is sized in EU numbers, and the footbed runs generous, so most people size down to the next size or choose the Narrow width if their foot doesn't fill the Regular. The goal is the same for both styles: your foot should sit fully on the footbed without hanging off the front or sides, with a little space at the toe bar. We walk through the exact conversions in our Boston sizing guide and our Arizona sizing guide, and because the sizing matches, once you nail your size in one you'll know your size in the other.
Can I wear socks with either one?
You can wear socks with the Boston easily, and with the Arizona it's more of a style choice. The closed-toe Boston is the natural sock-friendly pick, which is a big reason people wear it in cooler months. The Arizona, being an open sandal, can be worn with socks too if that's your look, but it was designed for bare feet in warm weather. One tip from the fitting bench: if you plan to wear socks regularly, factor that in when picking your size, since a thicker sock takes up room on that roomy footbed.
Which is easier to slip on and off?
Both are easy, but the Boston is the true slip-on. The Boston has no buckles, so you just step in and go, which makes it the convenient grab-it-by-the-door shoe. The Arizona has two adjustable buckle straps, which means you can dial in a more custom fit across the instep and ankle, but it takes a moment to adjust. If you want the most effortless on-and-off, go Boston. If you want adjustability to fine-tune the fit, go Arizona.
