Birkenstock Soft Footbed vs Regular: What's the Difference?

Birkenstock's Soft Footbed adds a latex foam layer to the contoured cork-latex construction. The Original footbed has the more direct, firm feel. Choose Soft if added cushioning is the part you want; choose Original if you prefer that familiar firm platform underfoot.

One naming detail matters when you shop: Regular width is not another name for the Original footbed. Width and footbed type are separate specifications. The actual pairs below make the distinction easier to shop.

The added foam in Soft Footbed models changes the cushioning. It does not turn the shoe into a completely flat foam slipper. Both footbeds remain shaped under the foot. Neither one is automatically right for every first-time wearer.

If you already enjoy an Original Arizona, there is no need to change just because Soft sounds like an upgrade. If you want added cushioning and a clog, compare the Taupe Boston Soft Footbed. For a sandal with more adjustable straps across the top, look at Florida.

Compare two Arizonas without mixing up the materials

The Black Birko-Flor Arizona and Metallic Silver Soft Footbed Arizona share the two-strap shape, but both the upper and footbed differ. The Silver pair uses leather; Black Birko-Flor is synthetic. Their price difference is not a separate charge for the foam layer alone.

Try the same intended size and width first, then check each pair on your foot. Compare the contour, cushioning and strap contact. Choosing Soft Footbed does not automatically mean you need a different size.

Boston and Arizona are model names, not footbed guarantees. They exist in different versions. Check footbed construction, upper material and width on the product you select. A missing "Soft" in a shortened product title is not enough to identify the footbed.

Fit still comes before the footbed label

Use Birkenstock's size chart and let your foot sit inside the shaped footbed without resting on its raised edge. Check both feet, with room around your toes and heel. Choose width separately rather than using a smaller size to make a wide shoe feel tighter.

Short indoor try-ons let you compare the initial feel. Break-in time varies; buying a particular footbed does not come with a fixed number of days to comfort.

Regular/Wide and Medium/Narrow are width labels. The outlined footprint marks Regular; the filled footprint marks Narrow. None of these four Feet Heart listings has a separate Width selector. Call (310) 398-7497 to confirm the exact pair if its width is unclear.
