Birkenstock's own product documentation describes the difference precisely: “The hallmark of the soft footbed – the anatomically formed foam insert – is made of millions of tiny air bubbles that make walking and standing easier.” Everything else in the sandwich is shared with the original: a moisture-absorbing suede lining, two stabilizing jute layers, the cork-and-latex footbed core, and a shock-absorbent EVA outsole. The foam insert is the only structural change.

Does the Soft Footbed change the fit or size?

No. Both footbeds are built on the same last with the same EU sizing and the same regular (wide) and narrow width options. If you wear a 38 regular in the original footbed, you wear a 38 regular in Soft Footbed. The Soft version can feel slightly snugger out of the box because the foam layer fills a bit more volume, but it compresses within a few wears — do not size up to compensate.
