Best Birkenstock Sandals for Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is the most common reason customers come into our store asking specifically for Birkenstocks. The cork-latex footbed gives the deep heel cup and arch support most flat sandals don't, but the model and footbed type matter. Here are the four we recommend most.
Why are Birkenstocks good for plantar fasciitis?
The cork-latex footbed has a deep heel cup that cradles the heel pad and a raised arch that supports the plantar fascia. Combined with a metatarsal arch and toe grip, it offloads pressure from the heel — which is where plantar fasciitis pain lives.
Arizona — the most versatile pick
The two-strap Arizona is the gold standard. Wide, adjustable straps over the forefoot, deep heel cup, classic cork footbed. Available in regular and narrow widths. See our Arizona sizing guide.
Boston — the closed-toe option
The Boston clog is the closed-toe sister to the Arizona. Same footbed, fully enclosed toe box — better for cooler months, walking longer distances, and anyone who wants the foot more secured. See our Boston sizing guide.
Mayari — a sleeker alternative
If the Arizona looks too bulky, the Mayari has a single toe-loop and a delicate strap — same cork footbed underneath, more wearable with dresses or a slimmer outfit. Same EU sizing.
Gizeh — the thong option
The Gizeh is the toe-post version. Same cork footbed, same arch support, but the toe-loop design means it's not the right shoe if you've got plantar fasciitis with bunion or toe-joint pain — the post can aggravate the toe area.
Soft footbed or original?
If you're new to Birkenstocks and have active plantar fasciitis, start with the soft footbed. It adds a foam layer over the cork so you build up tolerance to the arch support without overdoing it on day one.
Sizing for plantar fasciitis?
Order your normal Birkenstock EU size — the heel cup needs to align with your actual heel, so sizing up to "be safe" defeats the purpose. Choose narrow width if your foot is on the slimmer side.
